6m Bills Go Unpaid
Posted 2008-01-9
More than six million household bills went unpaid last year as budgets became tighter, research says.
Of all bills, people mainly overlooked council tax in the second half of 2007, with 2.3 million people either failing to pay or paying late.
The research, conducted by YouGov for MoneyExpert.com, also said 1.3 million people found it hard to pay energy bills on time.
The website also warned rising energy prices and the ongoing credit crunch may mean people find it even harder to pay.
Sean Gardner, MoneyExpert.com CE, said: “Paying one bill late is not something to panic about. But if you find this is becoming something of a habit then you need to take action.
“Missing bills can have serious consequences, whether it’s losing a service altogether or even ending up in court.”
Almost three million people in the UK failed to make their credit card payments, causing them to pay out £35 million in fees, according to other YouGov statistics provided by moneysupermarket.com.
